When driving a nail into a board sometimes is will split. Take a good look at the point of the nail. You will see two sides that are a mite longer'n the other two. The two longer ones are the 'cutters' and should be placed across the grain of the board. They will cut the grain and not split the board.Dulling the point will also help. oldhootgibson.
