Best, no cost, humane way to correct animals when they are into something they shouldn't be into; take a spray bottle (make sure bottle is thoroughly cleaned and rinsed of any chemicals) and fill with water. Mark bottle so that no one uses it for something else. Next time your cat gets on the countertop or your dog tries to steal food from the table or trashcan, spritz the animal in the muzzle (face) area with the water spritzer (avoid the eyes). You have to catch the animal in the act of doing something bad, or the lesson won't be learned. Cats usually hate water on their fur, and dogs will avoid an unpleasant (but painless) experience.
