|We had electricity on our farm but my grandparents didn't have it yet. |
They had an old wringer washer that was powered by a small gasoline moter. I can remember grandpa getting it started for grandma to do the wash. It was a lot of fun watching that thing run.
I also remember grandma heating the sad irons on the kitchen stove to do her ironing. They had a radio that grandpa would turn on at noon time to get the market reports from Kansas City. It was a big old console radio that ran on those big old dry cell batteries, so grandpa didn't turn it on except for the time he was in the house at noon. I remember when they finally did get electricity on the farm and converted their Aladdin lamps from kerosene, or coal oil as it was known then, to electricity. I still have one of these converted lamps. I also still have one of their kerosene lamps that they did not convert.
