Childhood Farm Memories
As a city kid I was sent to my Granddaddy's farm for the whole of summer vacations. It was a 600 acre farm that was planted out mostly to cotton, soybeans, and sugar cane in Southwest Louisiana. The day always started at 5;00AM coffee, followed by getting eggs outta the henhouse, then my Granny's hearty breakfast. The farm work was hard and the summer days seemed to last for endless hours. Granddad was a good Blacksmith and had his shop right in the big barn next to the farmhouse.I don't remember how many hours I worked the manual bellows for his forge but I sure worked up a hardy sweat doing it.Thing I remember most tho was the gentleness of my Granddad.....he never raised voice nor hand to me and I sure learned a lot from him.The memories are good but the pain of losing him has never faded.
