Farm Memories - Circa 1952
Circa 1952--Well not quite pre-electric but, A one room country school a half mile from the farm up hill on a gravel road. It had no running water so we carried water from a nearby farm. Had chemical toilets and a bell loft. Heat was a coal stove on one side of the room and the little ones seats were closest to that stove. Went there for all eight grades.

On the Farm we had no running water so had a tank in the dug out under the house that was filled by a pipe from the well house. A cistern pump was used in the kitchen to draw the water up into the hand washing sink. Had an outhouse (two holer) which mom redecorated with a flannel seat cover with red ric-rac sewn around the edge of the holes. Dad hooked up a light in there with a pull chain for those late night trips. That was unforgiving living during the harsh winters in the midwest especially on those -40 degree days.

Can still remember scraping frost off the inside of the window in my bedroom and sleeping in long-johns with the trap door. We dairied so all the chores had to be done before school. That meant alarms were set for 4AM (24/7). What fun I had!
