|I grew up on farms in Northeastern Ohio. When I was about 7 years old (around 1951 or 1952), I began driving tractor for the man that our family worked for. It was a big Minneapolis Moline with a hand clutch. I couldn't reach the pedals very well but I could operate the hand clutch.|
We were still putting up some loose hay but mostly small square bales. We were also binding corn stalks, making corn shocks, and then picking up the bundles later. I drove the tractor pulling the hay/corn wagon. I wasn't really strong enough or skilled enough to turn the tractor around at the end of the rows, so if/when I messed up the turn well enough, one of the men would jump up onto the tractor and get me started back down the field.
I can barely remember life before driving. I still love to drive anything that moves.
