As A Child
I guess I was very lucky as a child growing up in a small east Texas town. We lived about 3 miles outside of Alba Tx. and my brother and I were raised on a dairy farm so early rising was a fact of life. At the age of 8 it was my responsibilty to see that I was at the barn by 4;30 am. to relieve my mama so she could sort mail and run the mail route, but all was not bad because when the milking and cleanup was done my Grandmother ( Granny Gene)always had a big pot of oats made with fresh toast. After a great breakfast it was off to school for the day and then back to the milk barn by 4;00 that evening. We didn't get to watch much tv. cause we were to tired, but my daddy made sure we had the chance. My daddy worked 7 days a week in the oilfield and then put in all the time he could in the barn and with us boys. I still live on the old family farm and you know sometimes I can still smell oats cooking on that old stove. The dairy is long since gone, but sometimes sitting out with my wife on the back porch late in the evening I can just feel the presence of the GOOD OLE DAYS
