Home Made Ice Cream And Fire Flies
I remember when I was a young girl growing up in California I would get excited when my parents announced we were going to Oklahoma to visit Grandma. This was a treat because being at grandma's house was like going back in time to a much simpler way of life. Grandma had a trunk that she kept many of her old things in and once in awhile she would unlock it and let me rumage through all the wonderful things she had stored inside. Pictures of the family, lace dollies she had made and trinkets from so long ago lay inside. In the afternoon someone would throw a fresh killed chicken on the grill while me and my cousins would play hide and seek. After supper when we were full of chicken, potato salad, beans and corn bread someone would bring out the old wooden ice cream freezer and make ice cream. Soon there would be cries from all of us children wanting to be first to crank the handle. After the sun would go down we would sit on the back porch steps eating ice cream and watching fire flies flicker in the night. From the distance we could hear the whistle of a train as it headed for places far away. Grandma has been gone now for twenty years. The home place, which stands only in my memory, was torn down a year ago. Whenever I feel down I close my eyes and I remember those long ago summer days at Grandma's house.
