Growing Up In Nebraska
Snow sledding was one of my favorite outdoor activities. One Christmas my two sisters and I got new sleds. My friend Linda and I were game for anything fun and adventurous. We headed for the hill we sledded on in years previous. It was a steep hill, and when the snow was deep enough and the right amount of moisture you could fly down the hill. We took my sled that afternoon. The snow was slick. We piled on my sled and down we went. We were going to fast to stop even if we put our feet out and stop. We went down the hill and slid out into the fairly deep water ditch and hit a big log. We gathered outselves and tried to find our over shoes, (that's what we called them in the 50's) We gathered up the sled that had flat runners off to the sides. Home we went and got another sled for some more fun. Another yearly event was when my granddad took us kite flying in the beautful wild flower meadow. He rigged up a kite on a fishing pole. He got the kite in the air a long ways. We sure had fun picking wildflowers to take home. Remember the double bladded skates with the straps. That's is what I learned on. That was great to. I had a great child hood to say the least.
