1,package active dry yeast, 1/2 teaspoon sugar. 1 1/2 cups warm beer ( 105-115 deg.F), 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 egg,beaten. coarse salt.
In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm beer.(German). Add flour and blend well. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead 8 to 10 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover and let rise in warm place (85 deg.F). about 1 hour or until double in size. Cut dough in 24 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball. With floured hands, roll each ball between palms to form a rope 14 to 16 inches long. Twist into a pretzel shape. Place on greased baking sheets about 1 1/2 inches apart. Brush each pretzel with egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake at 475 deg.F
Bake 40 minutes or until done. Makes 2 loaves.
