my buddy's grandson is a soldier in afghanistan, and i read his latest letter home today. it was a little troubling because he talked of them (the local stoneagers) "rounding up" their scattered womenfolks. i know we went over there for osama, not to create trouble but it didn't turn out that way. now that the dust has settled and fundy warlords are running their regions and exporting opium again, the women have to cover their faces up, they get their pubes cut and are subject to stonings if they're found to have violated virginity rules. nothing worse than an unruly servant, ay? except now a few women have tasted western freedom and are raising cain so if they're not smart enough to pipe down or humble enough to suicide, they're killed too. how much did we accomplish? what gives us the right? all those questions again. :)

The sad thing is that before 1996 some women wore
burqa (mostly pashtuns) but there were many women
in Afghanistan active in government and professional
life. When the taliban took over in 1996 certain
professions like medicine and teaching fell apart
because most of the professionals were women!
