The Montana State Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising golfers to take extra precautions and be on the alert for bears while in the Gallatin, Helena, and Lewis and Clark National Forests golf courses. They advise golfers to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert, but not startle the bears unexpectedly. They also advise them to carry pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity. Golfers should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings on the golf course. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur. Grizzly bear droppings have bells in them and smell like pepper spray.

Here is a response that just tickled the heck outta me....don't know why I thought of Fern when I read it tho.... :^) Clipper:^)

I'm not a golfer but do hike occasionally in grizzly country.

I always make it a point to never hike alone and always carry a handgun.

The handgun isn't to shoot the grizzly bear but rather to shoot one of my hiking companions if we encounter a bear.

I prefer a shot to the knee, a human hopping around on one leg screaming their head off will keep any grizzly occupied for a long time.

I love it!!
That is funny, I have a few golfers I will have to send that too.
Might have to change it to alligators and mountain lions though for our area.

Now that's what is a tough "out of bounds" penalty.
