Tire Hoist

Since the doc says I shouldn't be lifting, well just about anything from ground level, I was tinkering with this idea to hoist (junkyard bound) tires into my truckbed:
An A frame deal in the back of my pickupbed w/a roller thing welded to the top, all hooked up to the winch on the front of my rig - just need a device to clasp on to the tire so it fits under the A frame- Any latching ideas to keep the tire pretty central to the tip of the A?

Iffen it was me i'd weld a short piece of pipe either on the back bumper or in the bed (depending on the layout of your trk) and make a "cherry picker" type hoist with a base of smaller pipe that would slip into the other pipe so you could swing it once the load was lifted...as far as what type of device to grab the tire/wheel with...a piece of chain with a flat bar or small angle at the end should work great. A hook at the end of the hoist, chain will allow adjustment and the bar will allow you to slip it in vertically and then turn horizantally once under tire/wheel and lift. You could have a short bar for tires with wheels and a longer one for tires alone. Whatca Think???

Just in case...chain goes in middle of the bar. Boy, talking to someone and typing are sure two different things..........

How about a set of ice tongs? The kind where lifting by one handle actually closes the tongs.
