YES, heartworms could cause this cough and is probably what it is. If you don't take the dog to the vet, (and we don't believe in spending more on animal health care than we can afford to spend on the people in our house) one thing that could help is to give the dog an asperin once in a while. This was advice given to me by a girl who worked at the vet's clinic a few years ago.

Dogs can take people asperin, no problem. Wrap it in a piece of bread or something the dog will eat all at once without spitting it out. Make sure the dog has access to plenty of water and grass, as they will eat grass to make them spit up when they need to. I give our lab an asperin every other day and he's got heartworms, but it does seem to help a LOT. He's now 11 years old and does not see a vet.

The asperin helps to thin the blood and helps the clot of heartworms to be able to pass on through the heart and out the system, is what I was told. Seems to work here. With a small dog, you might want to give only half an asperin at a time, not more than once a day or every other day. Can't hurt.

My FIL's dog is a small mix, and she has the cough like you are talking about. She doesnt have heart worms, but rather she is just old and her heart and such is failing. :( If you are giving heartworm meds regularly, that probably isnt it. His little dog is on meds for her condition, but eventually it will take her. I would take her on to the vet. Best Wishes, Kelly

I know you must be very nervous..If the dog has heart worm you must get meds from your vet..Also may just be an upper resp. infection..would need anti-biotics.. I hope u find the answer..keep us informed ok?
