What did Ross Perot say about a giant sucking noise and a lot of new low pay jobs?

We have reached the point where technology is advancing faster than the average American's ability to keep up. Because of robotics and computerization, there is need for less labor in industry and the result is a large underclass of people who, while they are no longer needed to work in the factories, still need to eat and wear clothes. They can find part time jobs and many of the low cost foreign goods they need at Walmart. Without a Walmart-type store they would starve and/or go naked. As Martha says, "that's a good thing"

Walmart isn't stupid. They have us programmed to think of them warmly, the friendly bargain place where we can socialize. (Have you ever seen a greeter at the door of a fancy Dept Store??) They followed the Ronald McDonald plan of hooking the kids when they are 2 into life long fans. Just check and see how many tykes know the golden arches. Walmart is doing the same for adults.

I've been watching this Wal-Mart thing for a while now, and frankly, I don't much give a rat's patootie for or against Wal-Mart. It is what it is, don't shop there if it doesn't suit you.

Whether you like Wal-Mart or not, they got big by selling on low price & high volume. An awful lot of people must like Wal-Mart or it would have gone bust long ago. The one's I've seen always seem to have cars in the parking lot.

For better or worse, the market has spoken, the people have voted with their dollars, Wal-Mart is gonna be around awhile longer.

I'll tell ya what I like about Wal-mart. That's where I see all my friends and neighbors. It's like the square was in the old days. Everyone went to town during harvest time on Saturday afternoons and stayed till the stores closed. They visited. Wal-mart is the new visiting place for me and my country neighbors.

You don't honestly think Big K is perfect too do you?

I'll bet you a dollar that all the big ones (Walmart, Big K, Target, ect) are guilty of all the same things as Walmart. We just hear more about Walmart because they are bigger.
I hear all these people griping about Walmart being bad for the local economy....Here's my take on this, Wamart is good for MY economy! I'll go wherever I can get the best deal. Within reason. No point in driving an extra 30 miles to save 99 cents.

Like has been said before, if you don't like the way someplace does business...Why go there?!
(yes I see you, Bob Az, follow that line of thinking.) Now, if the rest of us could just do it too. :>)

At one time K-Mart had a huge Union warehouse (Teamster Local 41/56) in Lawrence,KS
I'm sure others as well. The first sigh of organized labor in a Wal-Mart building and you're
fired. That's the main difference that I see. People have the right to shop where ever they
choose. In some places you don't really have a choice where you shop. But if a person who
draws a Union wage chooses to shop there, they should be "ASHAMED".
Sorry to offend, That's Just My "O".

Ok.Here is another story. This was on channel 13 Eyewitness news .(Marvin Zindler) Houston Texas.A few years back this guy had his calculator and calculating his products as he loaded them in the basket..The Wallmarts people told him to leave the store..The newsman said the reson was that the store folks figured out this "coustomer" was trying to figure out their price structure system.WOW!! What A bunch of hooey! I will eventually run out of bad news from Wallmarts.I wonder if they hired PR men to respond yet?

".The newsman said the reson was that the store folks figured out this "coustomer" was trying to figure out their price structure system."
I don't follow here...What do they mean by that?

Joe Dirt, the simple....

There is magic to setting prices. You overcharge on some items then undercharge on others.I have read how it is done but I advise you to consult an egghead from Harvard.Anyhow,,The folks belive they are getting bargains galore but are really not. I bought a hard drive from Wallmarts.40 GB Barracuda by Seagate.I paid 75 bucks which includes Texas tax..I looked at Tiger Direct online and found out I did not get such a wonderful bargain.I like to mail order things .You get exactly what you want,.,Not what the store has on the counter. You save a great deal by mailorder..Unless you are like my kin who buy from Fingerhut.

Clod, thanks! Now that you put it in terms I understand, I know exactly what you mean.

But I stand by what I said earlier. Walmart isn't the only one that does stuff like that.

I don't want to sound combative.....It just ruffles my feathers when people badmouth 1 particular place when all are guilty.

I worked there once upon a time. Wal Mart will ask anyone to leave who appears to be checking prices and writing/recording them. Kmart and the other big stores send spies to the competition to check prices on a daily basis. Wal Mart does the same thing. I'm sure Kmart and the others try to spot the spies and kick them out too. Its just a big game but they are very serious about it.
At least that's the way it was in the late 80's when Wal Mart still had some competition.
