Strange question but my daughter is going through a bit of stress on this one. Her 4th child was born last August, cute little guy (aren't they all) and pretty solidly built, sort of short and thick-limbed ... well anyways, her sister-in-law made a comment that the child was "huge" and she should consider cutting back on the food. The baby is 7 months old and weighs 20 pounds. Is this big for a baby? She's breast feeding the little guy and he is a good eater. Carrying some baby fat of course but doesn't look too big to me. Her other 3 kids are tiny little guys, as a matter of fact the 7-year old was more than 20 pounds at that 7 month stage and he's a tiny squirt compared to his grade 1 classmates. Just thought I'd ask here what you think. By the way, her pediatrician has never commented on the situation but he's one of those super-positive type doctors and probably wouldn't say anything unless the problem was critical (which I'm sure it isn't).

I dont think it is a problem, my son weighed nearly 10 lbs at birth and while we had some probs. finding milk for him he picked up alot of weight when we did, he's 5 now about 4 ft. tall nearly 80 lbs and he's not fat, but his dad is a big guy (grin) 6'6" 280.

Your Grandson is doing just fine and just as soon as he starts moving around, you will be surprized just how fast he skinnys and tones up.

My little one was 7lbs and doubled his weight in the first two months!! I saved all of this little pants and when he started potty training at 18 months (his idea) I pulled all of those little pants out and they fit him just fine!!!
By two years old, he was a wired bean pole - still is!!

As long as her doctor isn't worried, tell her not to worry either. Every baby is different.

No he is not

my sons were the same way at that age

That comes from feedng your kid the perfect food

most people feed the kids from a bottle of crap.

my kids put on weight before they left the hospital and the nurses were amazed.

breast milk is more digestable and has better fats for the baby

Have fun with the grandkids!!

Tell her to mind her own business. We're all different, and while I know obesity can cause lots of problems it doesn't sound to me like she's any kind of expert, and is mean-spirited to boot.

For what it is worth, I just found one of those pediatrician charts on the web, and it looks to me like, for 7 months your grand-daughter is in the 'average range.' I'll post the link below so you can look for yourself.

Enjoy the grandkids!

Thanks Tom. I phoned my daughter and gave her the Kountrylife website and she loved all the answers from yourself and the others. She's really interested in the site you posted with the charts and all that stuff. She's feeling GREAT and will probably stay up late tonight till 9:30 and celebrate.

Tell the Sister-In-Law that her butt looks HUGE in those jeans, and that she MUST be eating way too much lately.
Then tell her to get a hobby and mind her own business.

"Thumper?...What did your Father say?"

"Bout what?"

"You know"

"If ya can't say something nice...don't say nothing at all"

Words to live by that I struggle with daily...

Mike, There's all kinds of beliefs on this. The docs use charts to go by. Both my kids are in the top 95% on hieght and weight.

Heck, I got an Uncle that weighed 13.5 lbs 3 days after he was born. They weighed him at the store when they went to town for supplies. He's 6' 5" and about 280 now at 68 years old.
