I don't know what possessed me. I went to pick up the kids report cards, and I was thrilled to find that Jake and Jenny both passed. Jake with all A's and B's and Jenny with all A's and B's except one C in math. But she passed. Also got an honorable mention award in FCAT writing. Anyway, she's spending the week with a friend and I called her up. I guess a little devil got ahold of me. I said...

"Sorry kid, looks like you'll be repeating eighth grade." I'm grinning, thinking she's going to say, sure, right.

"Whaddya mean?" She says. Okay, she fell for it, so I keep going.

"Whaddya think I mean?"

There was a long silence and then...

"I won't do it! I'll quit first! You can't make me go back to that school! I swear...I'll leave the state!"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa...!" I was literally stepping on the brake in the truck, thinking I could slow down the mess I'd set in motion via the speedometer.

"I WILL NOT GO BACK TO THAT SCHOOL! NEVER!" She was....shrieking.

"JEN!"

"WHAT!!!"

"Honey! I was just teasing you! How could you possibly think you failed!? You had passing grades all year!"

"I didn't fail?"

"NO! I was just playing a little trick on you! You passed. How could you not know that?"

"I dunno."

Then God forgive me, she started crying. Oh my God! I'm a horrible mother. How could I do such a thing? I could do that to Jake or Jill and they would go, yeah, right. Whatever. Not Jenny apparently. I don't know if she was just hormonal or sensitive at the moment, but God love her I yanked her chain but good. I apologized, and apologized, and apologized, until she was laughing at me, and I still feel like the grinch that stole the ninth grade.

Remind me never to do that again? Whew.

let that be a lesson to ya young lady :)

We once had gotten a boxer pup named Squisher, and she got carried away, got to fighting & had a headlock on our trusted pet Cookie. Well i'd jumped Squisher about such behavior before, and was pretty well fed up so i picked up a chunk of firewood on my way to break up the fight. About the time i got there and swung, Squisher pulled her head back and let go. Carrying Cookie's head right into my line of fire. The wood snapped Cookie's neck and she died at the vets that night. I tell ya, i might as well have died with her. :)

Learning opportunity! - L    Posted 06-03-2004 at 16:02:18       [Reply]  [No Email]
Cindi,

I think you have accidentally created a GREAT opportunity to teach her about having self confidence. If you can, it will be good armor for the many disappointments that life dishes out to all of us at one time or another.

How you are going to teach her to have confidence in herself is something I can’t help with since you know her and I do not. But I think you have the skills to think of something - that can then be turned into a story that may help others.

Of course, she needs to know when to be confident and “stand up” for herself. Likewise, she must understand (be taught) that to “ fake it” when she shouldn’t can lead to much trouble. Then again I have run into people that BS’ed their way all the time and seemed to get away with it - though a lot of people could see right through their BS.

I may not have said this the best way but I hope you will get what I am suggesting through my poor writting. :-)
GO Cindy, SEIZE the moment!!

That was pretty funny Cindi!
Nice Lil' story you have there.
Bet that one will be remembered by you and your kids for a long time.
I've pulled stunts simular to that one on some of my family members.

No you don't.... no you don't deserve any smacks. Just think about the fact that you are a loving attentive mom, for one thing... and that Jenny's a bright, well-adjusted kid who can handle a little razzing now and again... and that your little tease is a far cry from the kinds of poor treatment or lack of attention tons of kids around the country get.
Plus, it cracked me up. ;)

Kids are pretty insecure, ain't they. Some day she'll probly laugh about it but not for a while. I think you owe her bigtime!

How you found a bright spot in that horrendous bahavior is beyond me, but thanks George.

Funny thing is I've never done her that way before. Since the palmetto bug anyway. I guess she just didn't see it comin'. Thanks for helping me not feel so bad. She could have just about anything she wanted from me right now. Good thing she's not that kinda kid.
