We westerners hear very little about foreign countries and their cultures - our schools don't think intimate knowledge of foreign affairs is necessary and real stories need real research so oue networks look for a cheaper story. So in many ways we're kinda isolated by our own greed.

However, some of the cultural differences that do make headlines are quite disturbing. One such practice is wife-burning. I understand there's alot of poverty in northern india, and wives are chosen by parents of the couple at an early age. Then dowries are demanded, and if the family of the young bride-to-be can't come up with the dowry, the girl is set afire by her husband. Is this common practice or a rare occurrence? Do i have the story straight so far or have i received an exaggeration? :)

I thought that was an Arab mode of transportation.
Dont you guys ride elephants, and bicycles, and walk?

I know there are cars and buses, too. Just wondering.....

I never did do that Mr Dead Carp! But it has happened from time to time Yes. Not when the dowerie is small but only when it is with held. I think what you would call breach of contract.

and is Delhi pronounced "Dell-hi" of "Deli"?

Rajah from Delhi    Posted 06-03-2004 at 17:12:39       [Reply]  [No Email]
Mr Ron, if you say Deli as in meat store you are most correct in your pronounceation. It is short for New Delhi India.

Mr Clipper the standard dowerie would be two gasoline stations and and three convenience stores but in light of riseing gasoline prices one gasoline station and three convenience stores would do. These days we must share the gasoline stations amoung our comunity. If no gasoline stations and convenience stores are available in good locations we convert all of that to one Barber shop. "Just sporting with you Mr Clipper".

I like indians Rajah..My nieces boy is on the indians baseball team (Little league) THey won the championship this year.I prefer to be nice to strangers.I has proven to be a good policy for me.Especially when you become the stranger to the larger number of other citizen. I like old history..I belive indians came to Egypt with their elephants to build the Pyramids. At the time Egypt was much like a jungle too. But the professional historians have their own theories. They tax me to teach children history

by the pros,,But I give free lessons.
