Septic Tank Location

Was asked to help locate a septic tank on a old property,is there anything available that will sense the cast pipe 2 feet under ground? My metal detector only picks up 12 inches under ground. Did not want to dig through the yard since the property sale is not finalized. But would like to see if the tank should be pumped. thanks Dave

Look for the greenest grass in the yard, and that would be the drain field. Pull a piece of string from the center of the drain field to the house. The tank is located on that line between the drain field and the house. Then look for a slight depression in the ground along that line, and most likly that is where the cover is to the tank. When ever the tank gets checked, or pumped, the dirt over the cover always seems to either be more than you dug out and leaves a mound, or less and you end up with a little depression.

Dell has it figured out. Just poke around with the rod. You should be able to map it out like that.

Might look for a cleanout just outside the house foundation,if there could give You a starting point. It would be a capped pipe fitting just above ground. Check with the County as to any permit for the house, They may have a record showing the exact location. Otherwise a piece of rod sharpened on the "pokin"end will do just fine although rocky ground can make a picnic of it.

Dave........most septic tank locations are straight outta the house from the main bathroom and usually within 25' of house wall. Since most tanks are straight fill over top, usually you can push a 1/2" rod straight down until it stops. I wouldn't go poundin 'cuz that means yer not over the tank, on the other hand it could mean you are over the top, your call. Start a search pattern on about 1' centers, most septic tanks are about 4X6 to 6X8 rectangles. Figger out some sortta "T" handle so ya can mussel it back up outta ground.

Ermma Bombeck ustta have a book sumptin like "The grass is always greener over the septic tank" pretty funny back innna 70's.........Dell
