long time ago while hiking the "A" Trail near Hamburg, Pa and nearing a road crossing we smelled a strong odor of "cucumbers". shortly thereafter we came upon a dead copperhead. (roadkill) one of our group then informed us that poisonous snakes give off a "cucumber" smell. any truth to that?

Don't believe it's so for any poisoness snake but it's true about copperheads. We were always wary on the farm when growing up whenever we could smell cucumbers where there weren't any because there was a good chance there was a copperhead nest nearby.

I can attest to the fact that some people can smell snakes. I am not one of them. Used to be a bunch of us explored the countryside, looking for caves, etc. and there was a lady named Mary in the bunch. If Mary stopped and said, "I smell rattlesnake!" everybody halted, then stepped mighty carefully. Was a rare occasion we didn't come across the rattler. I expect in the few cases we didn't, didn't mean he wasn't there, we just didn't see him. None of the rest of us smelled what she did.

You know Mr. Burrhead I do think that the Lousiana Crocadile had the most strong smell of closing jaws. I have learned they are the second most dangerous animal in the down south swamps.

yeah them crocadile jaws stink but the #1 most deadly thing in them swamps is a coonass with a loaded fishing pole.

Hope you enjoyed yer trip to the down south. I guess Clipper aint gonna be there to get the tail when ye go thru the up east.
