the other day i posted a question about ducks. beekeeper replied and answered my question, thank you...
my question today is....
do father ducks normally kill the babies?
i found all my babies drown. father duck was pretty rough with them when i was watching, but i thougt this was normal. the next morning all 11 where drown.
mom is laying eggs and sitting a bit, and according to beekeeper i will have more chicks.i think this time i will keep dad out of the coupe when they hatch.
thanks again

Male ducks are very mean. You need to watch the babys. The mom can watch the babys.

i have never seen the males hurt the little ones just the opposite around here course ours are only the wild ones now, but we just had about a dozen babys with both parents in the front pond and he would follow along behind making sure they got across the road ok and warned us to stay back seemed very protective of them.

Dale take a good look at them and see if they have been bitten on the leg. A turtle will cruise under the water and drag them down, especially if one is off by it's self.

You know around our part of the country, muskie fish will eat frogs and wee babies if they are in the water, don't know if male ducks, will kill off their young ones tho. Anyone else have a thought on this???????

I used to have a lot of wild ducks on my pond when the water was up. I have had up to 180 babys crusing around! Never seen that problem befor with them. Not sure if tame ones would do that. Mark H.
