Asphalt paving

I am going to have a section of my driveway where it enters the garage paved w/ asphalt. Does anyone have any tips/suggestions, etc. on this subject?

I watched some paving for the city last week and found out there are 2 grades of tar. After leveling and prep work, they rolled down about 4" of tar, then went and did another job, later came back with all their trucks/equipment and added a topcoat, bringing it up to match the rest of the street. Now i know why our motel tar was soft and cuouldn't hold a kickstand in summer. Probably no topcoat - it has more gravel and is less flexible than the oily base. I guess even topcoat can grab a tire track when it's hot out.

Just make sure the grade is sloped away from the garage so it dosn't fill up w/ water every time it rains.

We don't have anything paved here on the farm, but from my experience with some of the Borough paving jobs, here's my advice.
Get a reputable paving company.
Understand the details, if the job calls for 6" of blacktop, make sure that is finished surface. Depending on the mix, 6" of loose blacktop can end up 2" of rolled or finished blacktop.

That's good advise Ron. Paving contractors are notorious for promising a lot and giving a little. The best way to prevent them from taking advantage is to set up stakes and establish a level mark on on both sides of the area to be paved. It doesn't matter what the elevation is as long as it's level from one to the other. Next pull a string and measure down to the subgrade and record your readings at both edges and in the middle. After it is paved, take measurements at the same locations. The difference will be the absolute thickness of the paving. Always pay by the inch and deduct for shortages.....gfp

The thickness of asphault needed can be dependent on the surface it lays upon. If the subgrade is not good hard material then it would take more asphault. If you lay it upon mud or not good compacted material it takes thicker asphault ,,Then even sometimes it falls through anyway.if it is good enough for an automoblie it may not support a heavy truck.
