I had my two littlest granddaughters with me today (both 7 years old) so we went for a ride down to my brother's place to see his mini donkeys. While there, I heard what sounded like a cow bell coming from my uncle's house next door.
"What the heck is that?" I asked my brother. He said it was probably the "alarm" system my cousin has rigged up to let him know a bear was at the bird feeder.
Sure enough, there was the bear, right in the middle of the afternoon. My cousin shoots at it, deliberately not to hit him but to scare him off. Well, obviously that doesn't work too good as he keeps coming back. This is the smaller of two who come regularly. The other one is supposedly a huge animal. This one is maybe 200#.
I hollered over there "SHOOT TO KILL, SHOOT TO KILL", but he didn't. I sure enough would have. Next time, that critter might think one of my grandchildren looks like a tasty meal. It hasn't happened yet (black bears attacking a human here in NH) but it will some day. There's WAY too many bears around that are not scared of humans and that is not good.

Les that's the same thing that NJ used to say about bear attacks. Up til the last few years, suddenly they have had a rash of cubs trying to "PLAY" with young kids!
The ANTI's are still fighting the state and the hunters on thinning them out.
Here in PA. your bird feeder would have to come down!!!????? PA has certainly increased the odds of SSS being applied to the bear population. In fact several bears have been found dumped in not so remote areas.
Good luck,
Ron

Well, I guess I don't feel so bad about the rats now. Be real real careful. Thats scary.

I will take bears over rats any day, Kelly. I can NOT abide rats. I can deal with bears.
BTW, I had one at MY house last night. Didn't get a chance to perform the first of the three S's but that may happen yet.

we have everything from grizzlies to blacks roaming through here long as there isn,t anybody that leaves any food out for them they don,t stick around, never seen them attack anything without being provoked either, we live in bear country and learned along time ago how to live amongst them.
