I just purchase a large Nubian nanny and put her in the pen with my 2 adult boers (whether and one nanny) and my 2 pygmy's. The pygmy's could not care less but my boers are pushing her all around and will not let her get close to the food or the sleeping stall. I am assuming this is a simple matter of establishing a pecking order but will this end? My boers accepted my pygmy's without any issues.

Also, this Nubian is full of milk as she was used to produce about a gallon a day. Can I simply leave this alone and she will dry up? I don't want her getting sore or mastitis.

Hi Griz,

You are correct in thinking it's a pecking order thing. They are just trying to tell her "your new, your on the bottom of the totem pole" They will work it out.. I would make sure she is getting enough food though until they calm down though. It shouldn't take too long. A couple days at most. Although I have seen it take as much as a week before. How big is the pen? I am assuming she has plenty of room to "tuck tail" and move away from the power struggle.

What has happened is exactly what you think. You have disrupted the social order of things among the group by placing another in with the rest. This will end in time. Nothing to be upset about. Once she establishes herself all will be well. Another very valuable website for any/all resources is The small $6.00 p/year to join the message board is very well worth the cost. I've been a member for several years. All the best.
