What (if anything) does the hard drive currently have on it?

If it has a program NEWER than Win98, (ie Win2K, WinME, WinXP) the installer will not let you install an older program (sometimes. usually...)

You'll have to reformat the drive if it has a newer OS on it. Or, if it has been reformatted and is a LARGE drive, you may have to go all the way down to FDISK and repartition it, wipe the Master Boot Record and then reformat it.

Not unduly difficult, but somewhat intimidating for the average home user.

Someone told me that XP could not be FDISK and reformatted. Any truth to that?
