Tonight I took the 10 eggs the hen was sitting on since the beginning of June, since none had hatched. One looked real fresh, two had not done too much, maybe in the early stages of development and two had chicks in them. The chicks were well formed, the yolk was still almost full size. How long before they might have hatched? I marked the other 5 and put them back, the hen returned to the nest right away, the eggs were still warm so I don't think that will be a problem. I feel SO BAD that I "killed" those two poor things! Do you think there is still hope and how long should I wait? I will collect the unmarked eggs only.

Hard to tell exactly what stage they were at, but when you get a mixed nest and need to sort them, just candle the eggs instead of breaking them. Then you can return the full ones to the nest.
Here's a link :)

I know how to candle white eggs, but mine are brown and I have no luck with these. I thought all the eggs were "duds" since it had been so long. I only have the two hens now.
