I believe this is my mystery bug. I did some research, bees don't snatch up live prey, only wasps and hornets, and although this is a bald faced hornet, they are not aggressive like hornets, unless provoked of course.

I saw a hornet pick up a large bug and bite the head off it. I was kind of surprised, but not worried with my big head.

Sometimes my wife tries to bite my head off, but I never heard her use a swear word in the 20 years we have been married.

i anwsered your post below before i got here check it out . if you find the nest and go near it you will find out where the expression MADDER THAN A HORNET .

They're the ones that make the big football-shaped nests. They are usually very non-agressive, but don't really care for you messing with their nest! I had a full-sized nest hanging in outside within the window frame of a house I once lived in. They never bothered me at all.

If it buzzes past my ears..messes with my hair or lands on anything in my arm range it is SO dead!! I am the BIGGEST bug wimp and NOT afraid to be kick butt against the bugging buzzing stinging sounding nasty colored hornets/wasps /bees ..I am NOT feeling fortunate to witness them in this here USA..Ick..ugh..yucky
