Two things I have seen do this very thing. One is that the wire leading from the sender to the guage is shorted to ground. This will also give a max reading with key on, engine off. The other is the oil filter. Internal problem blocking flow to the oil system, backing up and overpressuring. He was able to drive it ok till repaired.

I think the sender is the more likely of the two things... got it home safe last night, and it autocorrected, just like Toolman said it would. I was verrrry impressed, amazed, astounded, etc.! Course, it was replaced with a burbling noise, but hey, it got me there, right? :)
Thanks for the input, folks- my jeep would have sat there till Kingdom Come, I was so worried to try driving it.

Sorry, Toolman! It takes an act of Congress to get me on the 'Net once I get to my house... I hafta cook dinner and referee kids, and by the time I got time of my own, most of you good folks are long in bed. I'm over here on the West Coast, so I'm the last to see the sun go down.
(Well, I guess folks in Seaside or Lincoln City are really, but- you know what I mean.) ;)
