I just caught a skunk in my live trap. Any suggestions on how to get him released without complications appreciated.

Without chickens around here to get them into trouble I just turn them loose. Neat little guys to have around. Got some ant hills, ground wasps? Just show them to the skunk and it will take care of the problem. they go for roaches, termites, red and carpenter ants. Good guys to have around. I used to throw a wet gunny sack over the trap before picking it up until I found I didn‘t need it. But then, I have been lucky? Then used hoe or long handled garden scratch-all too slowly roll the trap over until the door falls open.
Might add two things for I have released about a dozen or so, and never been nailed. The other, I let these little varmints get used to me working about them doing/finishing my chores, letting the little guy get used to me, before release.
Hint, Don't excite it. Talk softly. Move slowly. AND, I would not kiss one on the lips the first day.

I like watching the shake, rattle and roll in their short bow legged gates when one of them is running away. Gotten to be on first name basis, with four or five of them around here.
Everyone’s envying you, enjoy'em.
Fernan

Fern(MI) I followed your advice and the operation was a success. I didn't realize skunks could be useful until you pointed out some of the ways. I put a plastic sheet over the trap and hooked a coat hanger to the door with a long rope over a limb ,tripped the door latch with a long stick and pulled the door open and tied the rope off. Took that skunk over an hour to realize he was free and leave the trap. Hope he doesn't come back as I've been trying to catch groundhogs with some limited success. Thanks for the help.

Thanks, Fern.
I dont plan to catch any skunks in my trap
but that was fun reading.
You must be a good skunk communicator,
that is a unique talent most folks dont take the time to cultivate.
LOL
Good to hear a story from you again.

Pop it with a 22, when it settles down, dump the trap and leave it soak in the creek a coupla days. :)
