IP Addys...

There are IP's and there are IP's...

This is from that thread and was posted by GerritPR...

"The Lerker" had an AOL IP address. AOL works with proxy servers. I don't want to get to technical here, but that means that the IP address that comes with the posting is not unique for one user. Lots of users who connect to the internet via that AOL proxyserver seemingly have the same IP address."

AOL does indeed use proxies...Every user goes through these proxies...That is why you need AOL software in your puter to use AOL...It is possib;e literally for a million AOL users to show up here and post with the exact same IP numbers showing...This is a pain for administrators (Like Miss Kim) when they have to ban someone...If they do, they are potentially banning alot of people that are not guilty of anything...

This is yet another reason I will have nothing to do with AOL...Lots of other reasons too numerous to list...

AOL = Remedial Internet ;-)

this delightful exchange? :(

Burrhead Posted 02-24-2004 at 18:47:55 [Reply] [No Email]

I finally got around to calling AT&T about my ISP# today.
The other day when Prof Salmon was expounding his vast personal knowledge on us about my ISP# it appears he was all wrong.
According to the sweet lady at AT&T all the number ID does is give you the supplier.

Can you please point out the part that your tech-support person says I might have gotten wrong?...Maybe you just didn't understand enough of what I was trying to educate you on to ask the correct questions?
Run my numbers while you are at it and then tell me how I don't know what I am talking about...
You have a wonderful day there, Burr...

Now I'm back outtuh here. Next time you run out of somebody to lie about just use me. It works good for you.

Whatever... Posted 02-25-2004 at 08:25:29 [Reply] [No Email]

AT&T and AOL do not assign numbers the same way...
If it makes you feel better to think so, then have at it...
As for 'lying'...Pretty sure all I said that set you off was 'Welcome Back'... LOL

so in other words the server would lie about it huh??
I'll ask them to see if I can get them to clear further assignments with you.
either way you still aint got a clue. You might do better getting an AMEN if you check with BrudderLess. He lies alot too.

BrudderLes some udder lowlife back shooter is using your IP# on here.

Shame on you, whoever you are for using BrudderLes' IP#.

Yah?    Posted 07-30-2004 at 15:23:24       [Reply]  [No Email]
And I stand by it...

Too bad you didn't bother to save the whole thing (or understand what I was saying)...

Burrhead    Posted 07-30-2004 at 15:22:15       [Reply]  [No Email]
So what's yer point?? It still was'nt me.

Les    Posted 07-30-2004 at 21:15:32       [Reply]  [No Email]
"It still wasn't me" eh? Funny how the numbers and the language matches perfectly, even after all these months.

Burrhead    Posted 07-30-2004 at 21:43:21       [Reply]  [No Email]
Well BrudderLes why don't you do like Salmoneye said and post all the thread. The part we were talking about is not in your post.

It was made by JimB or JamesB I think.

To answer your question, no it does not match what we were talking about then nor now.

I don't have to phantom post, and I don't think you'll convince many folks with your lie that I have ever phantom posted.

Les    Posted 07-31-2004 at 05:54:25       [Reply]  [No Email]
I never said anything about phantom posting, never even have used the word and don't give a flip less about it. When it comes to the lying part, you're probably the expert of all time on that subject since you've made up more facts than anybody else around this place. Go ahead and make up a few more. You'll probably convince a few people with your extreme wisdom and insight.

Burrhead    Posted 07-31-2004 at 08:46:02       [Reply]  [No Email]
Thanks for admitting you don't know what the flap was about to begin with BrudderLes.

You did not post the rest of the thread for some reason. That speaks volumes about yer info.

Seems as though I ticked off someone else though...

Oh well...I have big shoulders...People will have to go a long ways to equal the ire of my pretty little Wife when she wants to pile on my back LOL

Hope you have a good weekend!

Aw I aint mad I just know it was'nt me that was posting and when I called my provider AT&T told me all the AT&T customers IP# from this area show up as the same.

ron,ar    Posted 07-30-2004 at 16:32:38       [Reply]  [No Email]
Ya'll wouldn't have that IP problem if all ya had was a string between 2 cans like we got here.:^)

ah heck what fouls it up    Posted 07-30-2004 at 17:16:33       [Reply]  [No Email]
what fouls it up here is there is only 2 providers and nobody likes the other one (AOL)

that makes them time you out pretty regular sometimes if to many folks are getting online at once.

ret    Posted 07-30-2004 at 13:49:58       [Reply]  [No Email]
how about keeping it simple and saying what is wrong with AOL? True, it used to be for the comp novice, but now even pros say it is as good.
Being as I have not had any other, I can't compare it with the others, but I sure know a lot of people that have changed providers back and forth and end up going back to AOL
Just curious

Salmoneye    Posted 07-30-2004 at 14:28:27       [Reply]  [No Email]
There is nothing 'wrong' with AOL if all you need to do is a little surfing and e-mail...

However, their software is insidious and invasive...Their search engines are programmed to disallow certain sites (strangely not the 'girly' sites) to be shown as they think 'they know best'...

The software once in your computer will change settings and preferences that it has no need to be messing with...It is one of the hardest things to completely get rid of without wiping the HD that I have ever seen...

Once installed it will take over any version of 'Internet Explorer' you may have and you must delete and reinstall it for it ever to be clean...

Like I said...It is great for a 'first dialup', and for anyone that does not want any more out of their connection than general surfing and e-Mail...

Some of us do a bit more than that though... ;-)

Gerrit PR    Posted 07-30-2004 at 14:01:25       [Reply]  [No Email]
Nothing wrong with AOL really; I guess it works fine for lots of people.. Personally I just don't like it. You have to run their software and I don't like the looks and feels of the AOL program. I want to decide for myself which Internet browser I use ( I use Mozilla and Opera a lot ). The same goes for the mail program. Especially when you have more than one email address ( I have like 15 or so, mainly for the websites I made and maintain )you need an email program which allows you to use more than one email address.

The IP issue is something different - it makes life miserbale for webmasters who want to know where visitors to their site come from. Furthermore it is virually impossible to ban individual AOL users, because you cannot identify them..

George in TX    Posted 07-30-2004 at 14:22:53       [Reply]  [No Email]
You said a couple of magic words there, Mozilla and Opera. I browse _only_ with Opera and test pages with Moz and IE6. I'm a weekend warrior with html myself, having built a few sites. I hand code everything and my pages validate html 4.01 transitional. I should stick in a strict DTD and feed it to the validator some time just to see what shakes loose. All CSS is validated as well of course.

Do you do professional web design? If so I'd like to see a portfolio if you have one.

Oh, and tell Patria I said, "HI." I've visited with her on a couple of other boards.

Hi back at you..    Posted 07-30-2004 at 14:40:25       [Reply]  [No Email] just blew my cover..LOL
Just kidding..

Good to see you:-)
Hope everything's well with you and yours.

Well hello young lady!!! I hope you're doing fine as well. Are you keeping the old man in line? Keeping his nose to the grindstone? Making sure he gets enough to eat? That web design is turrible hard work ya know. And that's my story and I'm sticking to it too!

Gerrit PR    Posted 07-30-2004 at 14:33:39       [Reply]  [No Email]
Hi George:

First things first: Patria says "Hi" 2u2 :-)

I'm trying to get into professional website design, but not really hard :-)
I did some sites for companies - right now I'm working on one.
The sites I build for paying customers validate for html 4.01 (loose) and for CSS. I mainly hand code as well, although I have to admit that I use Dreamweaver every now and then.
Right now I'm changing my designs to pure CSS and I'm trying to get rid of all tables :-)

Send me a mail to gerrit at and I'll send you some links to sites I made. I'd like to see your sites too!

George in TX    Posted 07-30-2004 at 15:10:24       [Reply]  [No Email]
I've never used Dreamweaver or any other graphic designer but if you're going to use one then Dreamweaver is the least offensive. Also a DTD of any kind will keep browsers out of "quirks" mode. And pure CSS layout is generally better than tables for the average site. Tables have their place though when you need to present tabular data.

I had to do a page for a music teacher for a recital that showed:

Performer .. Title .. Composer

Of course all the names were different lengths. I used a table with no td widths specified, not even %. The page would "flow" down to about 400 pixels with no hor. scroll.

If you're not already familiar with it check the link below to HTMLHelp. The link is to the forum. The board moderator, Darin McGrew, and the site builder, Liam Quinn, both sit on the W3C. The board is frequented by some of the best designers I've encountered who love to help people that want to help themselves.

This is getting waaaaay off topic for this board so I'll go to email. Just got a couple "honey-do" jobs to take care of first.

PS if I ever see you using MS Frontpage I'll argue that you're not a "real" web designer. (big evil grin)

Gerrit PR    Posted 07-30-2004 at 18:45:22       [Reply]  [No Email]
Dreamweaver isn't bad. At least you can get some decent code out of it. I never made a complete page with it though; I mainly use some built in tools ( like the validator ) to clean up some code wrtten late at nite, when one starts to forget closing tags and other things .. :-)

MS Frontpage? Never!!

Thanks for the link - I'll check it out..

Catch you later..
