According to the information at the web site (link below), eight feet is as long as a Black Rat Snake will get. Sounds to me like you have a record setter! I'm just south of Front Royal and can see the "Skyline Drive" from my farm. You would be on down from me and I suspect close to VPI at Blacksburg. You might see if you could contact some one in their Biology Dept. that studies reptiles. Bet they would like to see your snake!! I SURE would!!! Bet it's an old female. One web site I ran across said Black Rat Snakes in captivity can live over 20 years, that is a long time!
