And so will the Wife...

This is the first post from our new wireless network...

It is the first step toward having live webcam shots of the sugar shack next spring!

I am letting the Wife and the Girl think that this is for their benefit...

Cool! How many workstations? Do you have a dedicated server?

We "do" it here on an old fashioned 10/100 wired network - only two comps and internet connection sharing.. But it's working all right. I only wished I could get broadband internet access here..

Only two so far...    Posted 07-31-2004 at 13:28:55       [Reply]  [No Email]
Working out the bugs of drive and printer sharing, but the DSL is working through both...

Can't seem to get the dang things to recognize the 'Network Neighborhood' though...

I have made sure 'file and print sharing' is enabled on both and have done each drive individually that I want to share...

I know I am missing something simple...

Which OS are you using?
Win XP has a nice network wizard which will take care of that stuff for you..

Anyway you gotta make sure the workgroup name on both comps is the same...

Need some more tips? mail me at gerrit at

I left the default on both...

I named each puter and still nothing...
I am still running 98...Only updates have been critical updates...

Not going well, and I am almost ready to bag it for the evening...

Here is the setup:

First puter is set as 'server' on the performance tab...2 hard drives have been set for sharing...10/100 ethernet the supplied ethernet cable from puter to router...Router to dsl modem is the original crossover cable that was required for the original setup as per the ISP instructions...

I am having trouble staying online and have to move fast or I cannot connect with the browser...I have been constantly restarting to stay online...

I am stumped...

Before I'm writing you this looooong email, I need to know how you made the connections.

Do you have two network cards in your "server" and use one for the network and the other one for the DSL connection?

How is the harware connection for wireless network done?

Then, about win 98, I hope you have win 98 second edition and not the original release...

Let me know..

Should I get rid of the    Posted 07-31-2004 at 14:11:09       [Reply]  [No Email]
Old (red) crossover?

My sister has radio cards in her computers so she is no help...She DOES have the direct (blue) cable from dsl modem to router though, so I am strting to suspect that as part of the trouble with staying online...But that should have nothing to do with communication between the puters...

I just found a great guide about setting up the network that pretty much covers it all
here you go:

Well, it won't hurt to try that although you're right in you assumption that it should have nothing to do with the com between the puters..

We don't have DSL here - we live to far from the city and by the time DSL will be available here, I'll be on boot hill...LOL

Check your email in about 10 minutes from the time of this post - Patria gave me your email address...
