Party Lines

When I was growing up we still had the party lines out in the country. I remember our number was 3F14-which meant when the phone rang one long and four short rings we answered it.
Some of the other people on the line were under the impression that when it rang their ring they picked it up and said hello, and when it ranf anybody elses ring they were to pick it up and just listen!
I tried listening one time and one time only.
A new family had moved in the neighborhood, they had a girl my age(about 14}, and she was HOT!
One day I picked up the phone to make a call and she was on there talking to another girl form town. So I decided to listen and see if they were gonna say anything about me! The conversation went on for a few minutes with me monitoring when the dog came charging through and plowed into the chair I was sitting in,causing me to move the hand I had firmly over the reciever. Apparently they caught the commotion, because the girl from town said "What was that?"
The neighbor girl said, "Oh, probably just one of the nosey people on this road listeng in"
This started a diccussion on who it might be.
The neighbor girl concluded that to could have been any body except the New-Gen family, that we were about the only ones around there who wouldn't stoop to such things!!
I was more embarrased than if she had said it probably WAS me!!
I quietly hung up and never listened in again.
And they never did say whether or not they liked me!!

That is so funny! We had friends lived in Alabama some years back, and they had constant party-snoops. One day my friend was talking to her friend Peggy (who was on the same party line) & started to tell something, and said, "Ooops! Better not tell that over the phone, the ladies are bored today and listening!" then Peggy laughed and said, "You know Miz Heffner listens in on EVERY conversation!" And there was a few seconds of silence, and then a quivvery old voice says, "Why Paggy! You know that's not true!" And both Peggy and the friend about choked with laughter.
