"the united states is home to 5 percent of the world's population but consumes 25 percent of the world's energy and 30 percent of its raw materials".

I'm surprised you could find it. You must have really had to try hard to overlook what General Franks had to say in order to find this silly little tidbit.

Easy now - if we disenfranchise texas, you could cut those numbers by a percent or dos. :)

The only thing worse than lying is using just enough of the truth to make your point look valid, leaving out the rest. Election year antics are just exactly this type of thing. Always take what is said with a rather large piece of rock salt!!

Yeah, but how much does the U.S. produce compared to the rest of the world? Fr'instance, the State of Texas is the worlds 20th largest economy. California is #5 etc. etc. I've read the entire country of Australia is an economic engine the size of Illinois! So maybe we're not using enough!

steve19438    Posted 08-02-2004 at 10:13:45       [Reply]  [Send Email]
it would be neat to know what kinda stats we would see if production values were factored in.

Red Dave    Posted 08-02-2004 at 10:06:19       [Reply]  [No Email]
No Fair! you're trying to bring context to a raw statistic ;)

How are we gonna sit around wringing our hands over something once we understand it?

(tonque firmly planted in cheek here Dave, your point is valid)

Does that make sense to you!
Brings to mind an old saying "Figures do lie but liers figure"

yeah i know stats can be bent most any old way. but the way i figger it PARADE magazine is fairly conservative so the stats must have some truth to them.

"Parade" conservative....I think not.

5 percent of the world's population but consumes 25 percent of the world's energy and 30 percent of its raw materials".

OK let's think a minute...
we have 5% of world population
...what places have the most population?
...just off the top of my head (which I admit is a dangerous place) China, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico....to name
a few.
Comparing the USA population and energy and raw material consumption and to these countries is a little ridiculous. Of course we use more and produce more and live better than the common man and poor people in those countries. Is this news to you?

This is why so many other coutries hate us....
JEALOUSY

You're just making sense...

No one wants that...

We could all live this way to make our neighbors happy. But the game is like this,,They talk you into having less then they get ahead then say you are uncompetitive so we won.
