chicken jones was a circut preacher during the
30`s and 40`s in north west arkansas. chicken
worked all the tent meetings and revivals in that
area for years, so during this time he learn every
short cut and game trail in those ozark mountains,
as well as the homes and habits of their residents. ole chicken knew that at the end of a
sunday meeting while folks had a little visit before heading home he could mount his mule and
get to there home using one of those game trails
before they could get their wagon or old farm truck down that old gravel that would wind down one valley floor to link up with the next. well
chicken had that timing down, he could have the
run of the farm while the poor old farmers are making their way home, he would load up as many
chickens as he could get in a guinea sack and ride
off home leaving the farmers to wonder what has happened to their chickens. well that went on for
years making chicken jones one of the areas most
successful poultry farmers in northwest arkansas.
of corse from time to time these farmers in the area were finding them selves buying back their own chickens and the word was spreading that chicken jones was stealing their chickens, so the
race was on, every sunday after the meeting all
these folks are making a mad dash home trying to catch him in the act. well they never could. so my
gramps and his brothers decided to teach him a
lesson, one sunday morning before the meeting,
chicken jones was in the out house taking care of some
paper work when gramps and the garrett boys backed
up jones mule and threw a rope around the out house and tipped it and its contents over and while
chicken was trying to right himself and not exactly smelling like a rose, the garrett boys on
their mules with chicken jones mule in tow headed
for his farm and made off with as many of the stolen birds as they could, well that drew a crowd
of his other victims and by the end of the day there was`nt so much as a feather left. well chciken jones kept up his circut preaching but
retired from being one of the best chicken theives
of all time. true story and the names remain the same. chicken jones lived a full and successful life, dieing in the late 80`s in his beloved arkansas. the photo is of the garrett boys of
north west arkansas, it was the last time that
they all would be together. my gramps is in the
center. they are from the left, lee, silas, elbert,
omer and monroe.
