i shudder to think of some of the answers i may get. why is a skunk referred to as a "pole cat"?

Skunks are fairly closely related to cats. As a matter of fact, you can train a skunk (scent gland removed of course) to be great pets. They even use a litter box.

As for the name:
"Cat" comes from their close relationship to cats.
"Pole" is latin for "Scent of rotten chicken". :^)

I was just kidding when I wrote that. Look what I found at:

http://www.yptenc.org.uk/docs/factsheets/animal_facts/pole_cat.html

"The polecat used to be called a 'foul mart' because of its strong smell. The name polecat is said to be from the French poule chat,'the chicken cat' and it will kill chickens given the chance!"

hey, i got the BB (25th ed.) today! only ordered it yesterday from A.com and used the slowest (free) shipping. over 1800 pages. fairly comprehensive but doesn't list age of guns by serial numbers but does give approximate years of model manufacture. well worth the 27.96 i spent. 26th ed. comes out next april i believe.

Thanks Steve    Posted 08-18-2004 at 11:15:28       [Reply]  [No Email]
