We've always used an old electric cable spool for a bird feeder for the winter. It's time to put a new one in the yard. The local power company won't even sell one, they re-use/recycle them. Telephone company won't either. Finally, Saturday, it hit me what to do. There's always an ad in the local shopping news advertising plastic barrels for $5. Take a plastic barrel, fill it about halfway with rock and dirt so it doesn't blow away. Take a 4 x 4 sheet of exterior plywood and cut a 4 foot circle. Screw the circle to the top of the barrel. The plastic will last dang near forever. The plywood should be good for 5-6 years.

I drove by an electrical supply place the other day and out for free pick up were pallets as well as some pretty good size wire spools. You might try looking at those suppliers.

Never thought of them, we've always gotten our spools from the power company. I'll give them a look.
