Have a 89 chevy pickup w/ a 350 engine - trying to replace the fan belt, but each time I put it on the belt comes off when I start it up
Is there a trick to putting this on?
Is that belt tensor thing sensitive?

Gunner, Had that happen to me a couple years ago. Looks like a new tensioner is in order. Sorry. James

Mechanic says moe than likely, the tensore is shot and should be replaced

Belt on correctly and tensioner snug like you say? Pulleys all free? ....then the next step is to check the pulleys to see if one is out of alignment....that could cause it to jump too.

If it is not that, then you probably have the wrong belt.

Got the right belt, #'s are the same as the one that came off- my guess is like you say, something is misaligned
How can I realign them or even tell if they are misaligned?

Check to see if everything is turning freely. You may have an alternator, AC compressor or idler pulley trying to lock up.

Gotta be mis routed,that tensioner has to be pryed back against the spring with a breaker bar and runs against the back of the belt...should be a diagram on radiator shroud.

Yeah, got it pryed down and locked in place - everything looks like it's inline right - after 4 trys it just pops right off- all pullys spin freely-

Sounds like a bearing has gone out somewhere to allow a shaft to run out of true. Is the cooling fan running true with the water pump. Check all pulleys and shafts for side play on/or noisy bearings. Might even be a clicking sound and/or several hesitations of a pulleys smooth turning by hand.

check that tenisor pulley real good I thought mine was okay and ran a while but locked up and ruined belt Also check other pulleys

I've noticed the tensor comes loose after turning the motor over
The two arrows on top of the tensor, are they supposed to be aligned w/ anything?
