No hurricane needed. Idiot three doors down was doing some good ole boy wiring himself last night about 10pm and blew several transformers up and down the road. I didn't think it would be possible to do, but he rewired something at his main box and caused fireworks and a power outage. We thought a war broke out with all the banging and booming. I over heard his wife screaming some unkind words at him and I was about 300 yards down the road. About two hours later, a power co truck came down my driveway checking our lines. I asked what happened and the driver said something about two 220 lines and some idiot is lucky he just got facial burns. At the school bus stop this morning I saw the neighbor with a couple of bandages on his face.

Not that it doesn't happen, but transformers don't usually blow. Did the line crew change the transformers on the poles? If not, then a fuse blew. Most transformers have an internal. His must not have so the fault current blew the fuse on your tap. That would be my guess.
Or if the line was on a recloser, it might have bumped a couple times before cutting out.

There were loud explosions, two or three of them in rapid succession, sounded like a war. The bangs were accompanied with bright flashes of light. Don't know what the power co had to do to fix it.

Uhhhh. That neighbor is lucky he is still around for his wife to yell at. I guess the double breaker/4-wire setup turned the "idiot" all around. I wonder exactly what he did to blow transformers? Whatever he did, it was a Class A screw up. You just dont surge electricity like that and live to talk about very often. Normally the ambulance arrives just to see the smoking charred corpse laying on the basement floor.

What the dude did to cause that much damage in the comfort of his own basement...It will end up being the next chapter in "The Anarchists Cookbook"...
