Runnin through standing corn??? First, in Pa that is agricultural vandalism see 18 Pa C S A section 3309, if they cause more than $5,000.00 in losses/extra labor to pick, it is a felony, third degree, between a thousand and $5000, it is a misdemeanor of the first degree and between $500 and $1,000 a misdemeanor of the second degree. There is also agricultural trespassing, 18 Pa CSA section 3503, which requires either fences or signs.
ATV's in Pa per the DNR laws must be registered and insured to run anywhere off their own property. It is a crime to fail to identify themselves to a landowner.
Then you also have regular vandalism. as well as a civil suit against them for the damage and civil trespassing.
Also you may want to check out 18 Pa. CSA section 507 which gives a landowner the right to use reasonable NON-LETHAL force to eject trespassers and protect property.
As to the gate, Some poor slob farmer in York county got several years for manslaughter when he put up a cable gate, without a sign on it. He out the cable across a path known to be used by marauding trespassing dirt bikers. Some 15 yr old kid really lost his head. The District Attorney took the position that it constituted an intentional deadly trap to injure trespassers. The jury bought it and the guy was sent up the river. Same would be true for spikes etc. Have you considered running some really high voltage, plastic electric tape though the field so you can let some livestock harvest their own corn. I got a fence charger that puts out 3800 volts and stings like a bee. If they encounter the tape before you get the livestock in there, Oh well! An interesting thing occurred a few weeks ago, I believe in Ohio. A landowner had a problem with ATV's in his woods. He loaded a cannon and fired a blank load toward the woods. The ATV riders immediately assumed he was shooting at them and were fool dumb enough to report it to the local police. Landowner had three witnesses to the fact that he was firing blanks though.
My experience is that such idjots are not limited to yuppies. There's alot of country boys who are just as inconsiderate.

You've got four wheelers. In the winter I have snowmobilers. Here in NY they think if they own a snowmobile they can ride anywhere at anytime. Over your corn etc. Land is posted, have called the County Mounties but they said unless you catch them they can't do anything for ya. Had the President of one club call me and read me the riot act for posting/closing their trail across my property. Pretty much told me they had the right to ride.

what a minute. aint your place posted? seems like you wrote about some feller from maine with a ford explorer stuck in that filed last year. didnt he shoot a doe out of season and get stuck. you called the law then... why not now ron?

Those four-wheeler owners amaze me. When I ride my horse on the river-bottom, I'm very careful to stay on the roads, paths, and levees so I don't do any damage to crops. I've seen a couple of four-wheelers go whizzing right through the middle of a soybean field as though it wasn't there. People are so thoughtless.

just as bad as people mowing their grass/yards on sunday or anything that makes a racket!

Ron/PA    Posted 10-05-2004 at 06:20:42       [Reply]  [No Email]
No, not the noise. It's the fact that they see nothing wrong with driving through a standing crop!
I wonder if my Rotty could drag a 4 wheeler? LOL
Ron

i have a neighbor that mows his grass late on sunday afternoons and that just happens to be one of my favorite times to take a snooze on the patio. i'm not a religious person but i think we ALL need a day (sunday) where we can enjoy a little peace and quite. i truly believe that noise pollution is more harmful to us humans than we know.

oh jeez dang, i got a box of shells and could enjoy trying a moving target. :)

Peanut    Posted 10-05-2004 at 06:34:06       [Reply]  [No Email]
Simple ... dont forget to lead the "target". 'Bout 75 yards away moving at about 20mph >>> line your sights about 2" in front of the "target" and WHAMMO.

Morning Ron/PA,

Sorry they're botherin ya this morning. Are they on your property or just next door?? Sure hope they're polite enough to stay off your land. Wouldn't want to think of what ya would do ifin they were on your property! LOL

Are they hunting this morning? Just wondering. We have alot of hunters in an out of the poperty next door to us during this time of year. Thank goodness the majority of them are very thoughtful and don't tear around early in the am.

I sure miss the corn field of Ohio where I grew up. Don't miss hand picking the first two rows that were too close to the fence for the corn picker to get though!

Smile, take a deep breath and enjoy the morning......4 wheelers and all. Just be glad we live in a place were we can have the freedom to ride 4 wheelers or enjoy the corn fields. :0)

Ron/PA    Posted 10-05-2004 at 06:16:40       [Reply]  [No Email]
MJ, naw, they're riding in my field. I meant the field next door to my house. I don't object to the noise, in fact that doesn't bother me at all. It's the fact that the noise means they're actually riding THROUGH my standing corn!!!!
I love cutting the outside rows and the center rows for picking ear corn. We feed the stalks to our steers and calves. I just enjoy the time I spend cutting those rows.
I enjoy every morning, and give thanks for same, however when some yuppy buys 2 acres and a 4 wheeler and decides to excersize his freedom by riding through my standing corn, to see if he can flush any turkeys,,,I lose it.
He has the freedom, the 4 wheeler, and the unauthorized use of a the corn fields,,,, I get to take the losses??? What's wrong with this picture?
Ron
