Chickens: Clip wings, or raise fence?

My 4 chickens have a yard area of about 800 square feet, with a 6' redwood fence to the outside and a 4' high galvinized wire fence on my yard side. They get over the wire fence and forage in the yard, which is OK for a while but they are messing up my patio. Two are layers, two are only 4 months old. One of the layers will go back over the fence to lay her egg, but the other one is laying wherever in the yard.

I could add wire and raise the height of the fence, but it would look ugly. Alternatively, would clipping the wings work? Anyone do this? Know of a website that will tell how often/ how much to clip, and which feathers? If it has to be often I will just raise the height of the fence.

ThePoultrySite.com has got info on chickens klike you will not believe...
But I can tell you from experience with tthis subject...Clip them babys wings...Just one side...bottom of wing feathers...It don't hurt them and saves alot of time chasing chickens...KAtg

If you want to clip- one wing only, outer feathers at end of fleshy part of wing. This will look like outer 1/3 of wing missing feathers, will cause flight attempts to corkscrew. Feathers may grow back after molting, just trim again. Don't cut into wing skin, just base of large feathers. RN

my chickens are always flying over my 4 ft. fence and it drives my nebiors crazy! thanks for telling me how to clip their wings!

The hens do get heavier as they get into laying eggs more and will have more trouble flying over. Also age slows them down. Try the wing clip, but I had to raise my fence to keep bird-dogs that can climb fences out. Yes, it doesn't look very pretty.

That makes sense. My fat Barred Rock hen just barely gets over the fence, won't even try to get back in. She's like a pet. She sits at the back door clucking to be let in, and will come in if she gets a chance (chicken in the kitchen -NOT). The Arucana is flighty, goes right over no probelm, followed by the Amerucana and the Buff Orp. The younger are still pretty slender.

Going to try the one-wing clip.

course you could take them wings and put them in a deep fryer and that would help too, now im outa here afore kelly and the rest of you chicken folks pluck me alive lol.

I have half a mind to pluck the two young hens and make a meal of them, but I have only watched butchering of hogs, never killed anything except a thorny-head Channel Rock fish. It got the better of me with it's spines, I did such a bad fillet job there was not much left to eat. But I digress. It seems like plucking a chicken is too much work... ?

when we first moved out on our land we had all kinds of critters, we got 60 chickens,feed and raised them,gave them chicken feed, plus let them free range, my father in law got old veggies from the supermarket in town,never got many eggs though, one day and old farmer friend of mine came for a visit and i was telling him out of 60 chickens i was only gettin 2 or 3 eggs a day, and that the wife was keeping them for pets, he went and looked at them to see what was wrong and why no eggs, he laughed and said fat and lazy decribed them to a t, and that i should sell them for meat birds, guess we over fed them a bit, needles to say we are now out of the chicken and egg bussiness,lol

If you don't want to pluck, try skinning- cut down backbone area and peel off skin and feathers, alternate cut is slit down breastbone area. Technique similar to biology class disection of pigeon. Or find a Ranger to instruct in prep for roasting or camp grilling. RN.

Aw gee, that brings back memories! In college our class (Animal Science) had a lab. When we showed up, there were 60 little live quail in cages outside. They were prepped, we poked about them for 1/2 hour, and tossed them in the pail. Sad. Not sure what was the worst with majoring in animal science, between that, having to don a calving glove and stick my hand through a portal into the stomach of a bellowing cow (the teacher's aides insisted it did not bother the cow, yeah right - I was one in a line of 30 college kids), or the morning I did not realize we were going to the slaughterhouse, so I had not eaten. Was really hungry, the smell of slaughter/ animal fear is sickening on an empty stomach. Right after explaining how they electrocute the hogs, the butcher screwed up on one. He did not place the probes correctly behind the ears, so the hog got only half the shock. That hog screamed so loud my ears hurt for days.

Still, I do believe if you can't stand to see the slaughter, you should not eat the meat. I am willing to learn to do it myself, just afraid I would botch it and waste a bird.
