My tin barn roof is rusty. Do I need to prime before painting?

hello there artist-
i used a industrial metal primer before i painted that aluminium paint 8 years ago. before i painted i etched the surface some with that tsp cleaner and bleach. the tin roof on my house was new 54 years ago. i would say the primer is a good thing to do. it makes that metal paint go on real easy. i got no peeling or rust poking out anyway. just seems to fade. the first few years our roof reflected moonlight liike a durn mirror. quite a sight.
good luck to you on your roof. take it easy.
i learned the hard way that we humans dont bounce so good--
