Turn off your anti-virus software. It thinks the defragmenter moving files around is a virus and stops it. If that doesn't work, re-start yur computer in Safe mode. I think ME has that.

we had norton anti virus installed on our ME system. it so slowed up the puter that we got rid of it. we are now back to not downloading anything that we do not know who it comes from.

Lenore, if your having problems with scan disk or defrag because of running programs..... this is what I do (and I am running ME also)

Do a "Control, Alternate, Delete" and close every program that is in the window one at a time EXCEPT "Explorer". You must leave Explorer running.

Then try your scan disk first and if that works then do your defrag....... works for me.

Explorer and Systray should both be left on...

Shut off any screensaver also...

I've never had to leave Systray on. That's just one more open program you don't need running.

Lenore, if your successful at all that then don't forget to restart your computer after your done with the defrag.

You are right, and you do not need to leave it open...I just like to have the option of pausing a defrag and maintaining full functionality of the puter if I need it...

There are also programs running that are not shown in the ctrl/alt/del box...

The biggie I find messing up a defrag is the screensaver wanting to kick in...This may or may not be disabled by ctr/alt/del, but should be turned off through the 'Display' in the Control Panel (or equivalent by OS)...

Other programs can 'hide' at startup (they may or may not show when using ctr/alt/del) but can be prevented from starting up through the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) on the 'Startup' tab...Uncheck the programs/utilities you do not want running at startup, and restart the puter...

There are also other ways to speed up performance...One is to turn off cookies and JAVA if they are not needed...If you are using Internet Explorer, MicroSoft 'hides' files that you do not want sticking around...

Also, I highly recommend that everyone download and use a good anti-spyware program such as Ad-Aware...Download the freeware version here:

Salmoneye,

Definetly correct about the screen saver. I don't use one myself so I forgot about it.

Correct on "Selective Startup" also.

I stand....... "reminded"

I haven't used a screensaver in years...Most 'free' ones I have seen online are full of spyware (or used to be)...

Incase you have to dump the HD and completely reload. Gri told me that Norton ghost program can retrieve your things you want to save and put them back in after formating the HD.( I dont know that as fact myself) I just dump everything and start over.I save things on disk.. There are free programs to extract viruses online by major brand anti virus companies like Norton.I have used a couple. I find old PCs and load Xandros 2 on one for an extra PC. There is a 20 gig Seagate HD at Wallmarts for about 70 bucks tax paid ,It includes a disk to blank the HD and make the reload easy.If you need any of that let me know.

I recommend you go to
< http://www.computerhope.com/ > and check the question and answer. Really helps me when I have a problem, and I did have the same problem as you with the "defrag"
