I know it must vary, but on the average, how many square bales of hay can I expect to get per acre. Thanks for the info!

It all depends on rain and fertilizers Karen.

I fertilize as per soil test analysis and get anywhere from 100 to 150 bales per acre, and I get at least 2 cuttings and most years 3 cuts.

Karen, what area of the country are you in? We're in central IN, and you can figure 100 bales to the acre here, on the first cutting. Allow for rainfall (or lack of) for the second cutting, 60-70 bales, and third cutting, maybe 30-40?

can you advise good growing conditions (topsoil in inches, % of humus in soil mix, etc) for horse hay. I'm going to purchase a large property and may be interested in growing my own hay.
