Why Do They Get To?

Okay, I was watching the local news this morning. There are parents of these three boys that have requested for them to leave school early so they may PRAY. It is a mandatory practice they say in their religion. (Yes, it is the religion they practice over where we are fighting)

Now, correct me if I am wrong, BUT...we Americans are granted NO special treatment in public schools as far as religion goes. We aren't even allowed to pray anymore in our public schools. We have "a silent moment".

SO you mean to tell me WE cannot practice our christian beliefs BUT...they can leave school early so they can pray?????????

Originally the school district said no, but they say the reason they changed their mind and allowed it is because it would be so much trouble to issue all the make up work all the time.

What if I wanted to leave school to pray? I bet they wouldn't let me. Once again, we are catering to outsiders. I say, you come here, you do it the AMERICAN way, you go to school when our laws say to go to school. NOBODY should be any different and get to leave all the time.

IF they don't like it, they need to home school their kids so they can PRAY when they want to.

Okay, rant over...lol. Just wanted to see what y'all thought about all this hullabaloo. I say its nonsense.

They are not asking to pray on school time or in school, which is what got the christians in trouble. They are asking to exercise their religion in private acording to the dictates of their religion. In some states, students are permitted to leave early to attend religious meetings off campus. Whether, Jewish, Protestant or Catholic. Not alot of difference. In a local school here, the creationists, just forced the school board to include the "intelligent design" theory in the curriculum. Quite frankly, even in Darwin's book. The Origin of Species, he credits God with the process of evolution.
Isn't the purpose of the "moment of silence" to allow students to pray in silence if they wish.

There some brewhahas with the DMV, wanting to get pictures of faces and hair in driver's license pictures. For some religious folks this is an offensive request. For instance some moslem women who wear veils and burkas. There are some relious groups who are vehemently against having pictures or likenesses made. (the Amish for one, although, they rarely get drivers' licenses.)
In the overall scheme of separation of church and state, what they are requesting, may be quite foreign to most of us, but isn't that intrusive on the schools. Also, when they pray, it is accompanied by a loadspeaker, singing a prayer, and they must kneel and face the east. Doing it in school would likely be more disruptive than leaving. This is obviously a devout family, willing to be in a strange land, and subject to the stares and wise cracks of boorish Americans. How many of us would be willing to go to a Moslem country and practice our Christianity as devoutly? I early American history, Jews were forbidden the right to vote, in some cases were not permitted to own land, etc. In some colonies Catholics were persecuted. In early NC, a group of Protestants were executed as heathens by a Catholic military commander. Look into the history of how the Arcadians were uprooted from their land and dumped in La. as refuse.
It is undoubtedly an unusual request, but Moslem prayers generally are rather quick. If it doesn't disrupt the school schedule too much, why does anyone care? Would a Jewish child who misses a test on Rosh a Shona (Sp) be penalized and refused the opportunity to make up a test??? If a Catholic student misses school for one of the special services sometimes held in that religion, are they penalized?
We are a nation of many peoples, we brag about how tolerant we are and what a melting pot we are. This is one of the bumps in the road to attaining a better world.

If I'm not mistaken we get Christmas and Easter off in our schools. They close the whole school system down. Christian beliefs I think.
Finally here they give the kids off for a couple Jewish holidays.

who cares???
if they wanna pray let em pray, if your kid wants to pray pettition the school for permission like they did.
if you think "whites" are discriminated against paint yourself another color and give it try. i doubt it would last long.

Doc    Posted 11-12-2004 at 04:35:43       [Reply]  [No Email]
Why didn't I think of that when I was in school?!
You mean all I had to do was ask to leave so I could pray? ....... I was praying to leave, that must have been my mistake.

Seriously though. My daughter signed up for a voluntary religious class in her school but she has to give up recess to attend it. I let her know how very proud of her I was for attending the class. I didn't know they allowed such a thing but I guess if you do it on your own time it is still permitted.

Things like this p1ss me off. We kow tow to one person and forget the majority because we dont want to seem racist or non-politically correct.
Im all for individual rights but not when it goes against the grain of the majorities rights.

Texas, I couldn't have said it better myself!
I've heard it said that the most discriminated against people are young white men. There's assistance for everyone but them. I don't want to open a can of worms here, but think about all the different types of grants for education out there.
Having said that, I could be wrong, I'm just going by what I hear. My formal education ended my senoir year or highschool, after that I attended the more informal "Barnyard U"

White males are definately discriminated against....no assistance for us and we foot the bill for everyone elses assistance. Its the common belief that we caused all the other discrimination in the world as well. Guess we are the poster children for discrimination and all the other horrors of the world.

being a teacher for almost a dozen years let me assure that academic integrity is out the window-education now is about making sure no student feels left behind or bad about their position in life. No matter how far outside the norm their ideaology is-public schools must take em all and make reasonable progress toward a "goal" The majority of public school leaders believe you can raise the bottom performning students by placing them in proxcimity to the higher achieving(model) students. This philosphy is ludicrious-it would be like mixing rotten milk with the best you have and hoping to raise the quality of the lower milk-in essence all you have done is lowered the quality of your best product. I am not mandating that some students education be forfeited-yet they should be placed in an educational environment where they can be better served instead of wharehousing for social/economic reasons. Teachers in our district are overworked-I have a class in the spring with 33 students-it is impossible to properly monitor this many students let alone provide proper instruction and learning techniques. Of course at least 2 of these students will create havoc lowering the overall flow of the class and without proper support from the adminstration where does that leave you. Example yesterday during a faculty meeting it was stated by the principal that when a student recieves detention and is serving that detetion after school if they act up and disrupt then they recieve another detention. Very ineffective form of punishment-if they could not care about the first and are not being punished by it why give them another one? Constant disruptions drag down the quality of education this coupled with a lack of material, resources, budgets, support etc will drive you from the profession-yet our local superintendant recieved a 10000 a year raise while laying off instructors and of course expanding the sports budget. I believe that says it all. To take our student to mandatory functions I have to pay 1.10 cents a mile for use of the bus and 55 dollars for the drier all the time sports and band gets the same service for free. just lovely. The majority of people in teaching after they relize the game are those who don't care, or too unaware of the surroundings to make or want a change.

I understand what you're saying about the after school detention. It's my opinion that In School Suspension (the whole day spent doing janitorial work for all their classmates to see) seems to work wonders here. The disrespectful behaviour isn't so cute when reality steps in for them and it's out there for all their buddies to see.

So your school gives them a taste of their futures? very rich!

Well EJ, the saddest part of all is that most of them will either end up getting shot on the street or become Big Bubba's Main Squeeze in the big house ; )

you don't teach spelling I take it

steve, you are a very small person indeed.

jfky is obviously passionate about the subject and was concerned with conveying the information and ideas rather than proper grammar.
Teachers like jfky are being run out of education by self righteous individuals like you, administrators who are more concerned with test scores than actually teaching students useful information, and parents who refuse to take responsibility for their failures and are teaching their kids to do the same!

it is nonsense, reckless parents trying to get attention like any humping orangutan. but if their kid gets less education than mine does cuz of that what do i care? doesn't dumber competition assure an easier path to success for the rest? keep yer kids home, why should i condemn you for assuring my kids' future? teach the most promising ones to be suicide bombers, that oughta assure your race a rosy future - sheesh. :)
