I better not find the SOB...

When time and weather permit, I like to meet The Girl getting off the bus with the car ready to 'go around the block'...We look for 'birds', and deer, walk on a beach or two, let the dog get wet etc....

Went to the town beach around the corner and walked down to the water...Came back up along a different path and right next to the road are 5 spent shotshell hulls...They were not even close to the requisite 10 feet off the ROW for discharging a gun...The Girl and I picked them up and I explained that it gives all hunters a bad name to do stupid stuff like that...

We started walking back to the car along the road (about 100 yards) and there it was...About 15 feet the other side of the road from the water I could see the belly of a Canada Goose in the brush...I went back to the car and grabbed a plastic bag and went back to get the bird...

We did this same route friday, so it had to be over the weekend or this AM...

If I find the SOB...I am so PO'ed...I just don't know...Why the hell?...

I work so hard to put forth a good image when in the field...I can't even explain how PO'ed I am...

Disrespecting the laws...Disrespecting themselves...And disrespecting the bird...AND USING STEEL???...Why not go all the way and use lead, you freakin jerk! ARGHHHhhhh...

I spose my Gram would have said to look on the bright side...

At least now I have some coyote bait...

Thanks for letting me rant...

Your a good daddy Salmoneye. Keep on doing what your doing. :)

Kids are so influenced by what people are doing to the unspoiled land. Just like you are teaching your daughter about this, my daughter and I see trees and land being torn down constantly for strip malls and such. I took her to the next county to go to school there, because it was more rural, at the time. Now, it is getting overcrowded and we are on the verge of homeschooling. Things change, they always do, it just never seems to be for the better around here.

I love it when I happen to be here to see you go off, SE.

This country is, in my opinion, over-legislated. There is a set of rules for dam near everything, and the simple reason is, people have no common sense and many of them have to be smacked around by johnny law because they don't know any better than to act like idiots.

Mama never told them "you don't kill for fun" or "you don't shoot where you might hit a person" and "you eat what you kill or you don't kill it".

The best we can do, is what you did. Teach your own, by pointing out the shining examples of lunacy. There's certainly no lack of material to work with. (wink)

Thanks Folks...    Posted 11-22-2004 at 17:14:34       [Reply]  [No Email]
A, For letting me rant...

B, For all the responses...

C, For explaining to Melanie why I was/am ticked...I knew I would lose some people...I tend to ramble sort of free-verse when I get like that, and I can be hard to follow even for me...

Melanie - forgive...    Posted 11-22-2004 at 14:32:06       [Reply]  [No Email] ignorance...
I may have missed an important part, or maybe since I don't hunt I don't know the rules enough to be angry.
Was it because the bird was shot and left there? Is it bad to use lead and steel to shoot geese?
I don't plan on being a hunter anytime soon, but this is a particular topic that's kind of shrouded in mystery for me, since my family is more into fishing than hunting.

federal law requires all water foul hunters to use steel shot so that water foul will not pick up lead shot from the bottom of lakes and then die from lead poisioning

Sadly there are those which just like to kill things to feel "manly".They don't hunt for food or fur,but just to kill.Too much bother to skin or dress the game,so leave it to rot.Major conservation crime in most areas.Lead shot has been banned in many areas, due to it polluting the enviroment.Steel shot does not pollute, but has less range and knockdown power. Why use steel to unlawfully shoot a bird that close, using the illegal lead shot shouldn't bother you(sarcasm). These so called"sportsmen" give REAL sportman a bad name and reputation by their acts.

Yeah Melanie, It's a whole combination of things that look bad. First of all they shot too close to the road, at a public beach, killed a goose and just let it lay. It's not like they were hungry or needed a Thanksgiving meal. The steel shot deal, is the only thing they did legal, and they blew alot of extra money on that.
Kind of gives us all a black eye.

In the past three weeks I have run across 3 dead deer on my place. One spike buck in the illegal range and two small does. The does were probably shot from the road. Neighbor to the north found two bucks, both with good racks but left in the field. Proabably shot from the road. Neighbor to the south found two headless bucks, again not more that 75 yards from the road. This has been going on around here for several years now. Like to blame it on outsiders but it's probably some local "good ol boys". Conservation agent says he has and idea who it is but not able to prove it. Yet! He's good, will probably get then sooner or later.

I have never understood that kind of 'wanton waste'...

I understand being hungry and needing a meal...

I have shot and eaten just about everything larger than a chipmunk around here (and frogs too)...I love 'the hunt' as much or more than the next guy, but if all I want to do is 'shoot', then there are targets, clays and plenty of pesky trees in my yard...I don't need to shoot an animal just for the sake of shooting 'something'...

As for headless deer, that is just insane...At least when we find an illegal deer here all we find (usually) are the head and hide...

Five shells?

Sounds like he didn't even have a plug in his gun to limit the capacity to the legal limit of three...

I was already thinking of the bright side before I got to your comment on what your Gram might have said. The bright side I was thinking of was that it is sometimes easier to teach good when you have a clear case of bad to contrast it against.

Thanks for teaching the girl right...

Thanks...    Posted 11-22-2004 at 14:01:57       [Reply]  [No Email]
I did think of that once I calmed a bit...I tried to explain to her what I was feeling and why I picked up the bird...

I hope it sinks in...

im sure it did. i see that happening here all the time, dead elk, deer, moose, even bears head cut of meat left to rot, bears skinned left in layin right where they fell.i don,t hunt anymore and stuff like this is why i quit.

toolman /another    Posted 11-22-2004 at 14:26:18       [Reply]  [No Email]
good one i use to see alot when i was around town more, was a elk in the back of a pickup parked out in front of the bar, hunters inside gettin loaded empty beer cases and bottles in the back with the the time they got it home an hung it was wasted, not all hunters are like that , but it only takes a few to make all look bad.

I believe it was in the paper or on TV yesterday, caught a guy that shot an eagle.

toolman    Posted 11-22-2004 at 15:06:19       [Reply]  [No Email]
yup see sutff like that all the time too, thats maybe where gun control should play a role, if they are caught doing garbage like this , no second chance.

I agree that people caught for game offenses should be prosecuted to the fullest...

I do however have a softspot for people that take fish out of season or other game if there is a real NEED for it...

I still know some people that could fall into that category at times...

Most don't...
