saw blades too steve. before carbide came popular we used hollow ground blades for finer sawcuts.

It is a blade that is ground in a concave fasion (on both sides) as opposed to a straight line...

This allows the edge thickness to remain consistanyly thin as you sharpen back to the spine of the blade...

Hollow grinding is also used in precision screw drivers so as to give a uniform thickness to seat securely in the slot of a screw...This prevents buggering the screw head by allowing maximum surface contact between the two...
