Lookin for new pickup

I need a pickup capable of pulling a trailer and Ford 8N tractor. All I've owned in the past 25 years has been compact size pickups (Ranger & Dakota). I don't want no extended cab thang or dulley wheels. Need to pull trailer and tractor pretty far distance on occasion.

What kind and size pickup and trailer do I need? Electric brakes? Gasoline or Diesel? Don't think I'd ever put enough miles on it to pay for diesel.

Hey MikeT you're 63. Go to the dealership and buy whatever 3/4 or 1 ton pick-up that strikes your fancy. You deserve it. Get an extended cab though. The extra room is worth it. I would pick a 3/4 or 1 ton with a big diesel. The things put out hideous amounts of torque. Around 600ft pounds of torque stock and with computer adjustments that figure can soar.

One of those things will pull a house down and do it while you ride luxury car comfort.

The new 6.0 powerstroke diesels have been having problems with dropping cylinders, friend of mine works for a Ford dealership and was telling me that there has been many of them showing up at the dealership with the same problem. So if that's what your looking at getting I would hold off till they fix the problem.

If all you are going to haul is a little 8N Ford, a mid sized pickup should be fine. A full sized half ton would be even better though. Get a dual axle trailer with at least 1 brake axle and you'll be fine.

If you are going to pull trailers any distance at all, or pull any weight you want a heavy truck for pulling and stopping. Diesel is more expensive sure but well worth it in the long run. They last longer and get better gas milage. Also they really arn't that hard to work on. Just a little differant. I have two, a 94 ford 7.3 trubo, and a 99 SD Powerstroke. The power stroke is better, mileage and power. It also came with the trailer brake set up. YOU DON'T WANT A TRAILER W/OUT BRAKES. I pull some pretty heavy loads on my 24 ft flat bed including 8 tons of hay and my 4020 with cab, loader, and weight in the tires. I don't use duelys because I drive in a lot of mud and snow.

How much extra does a diesel cost?

Being 63 years old, I won't put more than 60,000 miles on it in the next several years (hopefully!). If I got 20 MPG as opposed to 17 MPG for a gasoline engine, that would save me 500 gallons of fuel, or say, $1000.

If a diesel option cost $6000 more, when where is the economics (in my case)??

MikeT these folks missed what kraig said.

You aint really worried about what will *pull* a trailer down the road, the big danger is what size truck do you need to control the load while on the move and stop it if need be.

I always go with a 16' lowboy w/electic brakes on both axles and pull it with at least a 3/4 with heavy duty suspension.

I prefer diesel because they don't nickle and dime you to death and don't need in the shop all that ofen as a gas motor,and they will do a heavy job with no complaints.(the Duramax do hang around a shop a good bit).

If you ever pull a load with a diesel Ford power stroke or Dodge Cummins you'd throw rocks at a gas burner.

The real savings is as kraig said. Trade in time or when you get ready to sell. I've got old gas Ford pickups that will bring around $2000 if I wanted to sell. I have been offered cash sales for the diesels I have in the same year models will bring $6000 to $9000.

What are 1500, 2500, and 3500 sizes? Is a 1500 the equivalent of a 1/2 ton?

Yes. 1500/150 is half ton, 2500/250 is three quarter, and 3500/350 is one ton. Common across various brands.

i'd like to look at a nissan or toyota first. wear one out - you'll never go back to detroit. little tugs go forever. :)

For that size load, I'd say a gas/automatic 3/4 ton. 2wd is fine for towing as well. If you don't need 4wd for other reasons, it'll save ya another $4000.

Electric brakes on the trailer, and a good controller. Tekonsha Voyager or Prodigy are good. A mite spendy, but well worth it if you do much trailering, and easy to install.

1/2 tons tend to be "Cowboy Cadillacs" and have very marginal brakes and suspension for towing.

Look at a "towing package" option if available. Brake and suspension upgrades are usually included in such a package, as is a transmission cooler. Barring that, an aftermarket transmission cooler is money well spent. Towing generates heat, and heat kills trannies.

I have a 2003 2500 Chevy Duramax. We haul an 18' trailer with mowers on it, it's a 7000 pound capacity trailer. Gets about 15.5 mpg all around driving. On the highway towing it would probably get close to 20.
Just the diesel and tranny alone was a 7 or 8 thousand dollar option. Real hard to justify. Also the trailer does have brakes, makes me feel more secure.

If all your gonna haul is an 8n 2850# dry tires I don't see any reason why you would need more than a 1/2 ton. You would be well below what the truck is rated for. I do agree with the 16' dual axle trailer. If you were gonna be haulin three days a week tractor plus equipment I would say something heavier. Why spend the extra in truck and mileage if your only gonna tow a coupla times a month. The new half tons with the towing package will do the average guy quite well.
