Maple trees

What makes maple trees sticky. My mother said it was the syrup and you had to put some kind of chemical around the bottom of the trees to keep them from doing that. My neighbors say it's the aphids and you have to spray them. These trees are too big to reach so how would I spray them? I have 5 in just my front yard so needless to say, I need to know what to do with them - soon!!! Thanks

Ya, I know, you saw this on Tractor Tales but they are pretty busy over there wading so I thought I'd ask here.

If it is aphids My guess Is the trees may also have a ant problem. Ants will eat and deter meny of the natural predators and parasites of aphids. Controlling the ants is a big step to control aphids.

What do you mean by sticky Sammie? We've got a lot of Sugar and Red Maples around here but I can't recall ever seeing a sticky one unless it was because I spilt my pop out of the tree fort.

Last fall, we had 2 large very old trees removed. I think they were a type of chinese elm that is native here to IL, just like the cottonwood. Anyway, they would always sap every spring where there was a crack, branch broken off, or branch had been sawed off before! The
tree man said that was the trees way of healing
itself.
