For years I have thought about writing down all the old sayings I have heard. Things like Tight as a Tick, I'll be John Brown (my mother used that a lot) Fair to Middlin (found out a few weeks ago that that has something to do with the
grade of Cotton).

Never started the collection because I never found out where one particular saying originated.
I know what it means but can't find it's origan.

Tighter than Dick's Hat Band. You guys are probably my only hope, any help? Who was Dick?

Fell free to throw in any other info if you know the origan of the saying. Some are self explainatory.(spelling?)

Many of the old sayings were a bit course in word or meaning, used to refer to"things" that couldn't be said openly...Having said this and if you are not offended by such language or entendre, here is a link to one of the best collections I've seen.
